His father, William Harcourt Isham Mackworth (1806—1872), a younger son of Sir Digby Mackworth, the 3rd Baronet, took the additional surname Dolben after he married Frances, the heiress of Sir John English Dolben, the 4th Baronet.
Born at Milton Abbas, he was the son of Sir George Bingham, nephew of Sir Richard Bingham, and his wife Cicely Martin, daughter of Robert Martin.
On 4 September 1677, he married firstly Jane Cuffe, daughter of Sir James Cuffe, he married secondly Lettice Hart née Vesey widow of Merrick Hart.
