At the 1906 general election, he was selected to stand as the Conservative candidate in Paddington North, where the sitting Conservative MP Sir John Aird was retiring and the local Conservative Association had found difficulty in selecting a candidate.

Under Aird's leadership, the firm also became internationally famous for building the first Aswan Dam; the business was also later engaged to increase the height of the dam.
He is the son of Sir John Renton Aird, 3rd Baronet and Lady Priscilla Heathcote-Drummond-Willoughby.
