The penultimate and longest chapter, 'Lord Osmund's Lenten Party' (over 250 pages), is a satirical account of a fancy-dress party held by three members of the 'Finnian Shaw' family, who are clearly modelled on the Sitwell family, Osbert, Edith and Sacheverell.

Born in 1963 in Rotherham, West Riding of Yorkshire, Andrews went to Sitwell Junior School on Grange Road and Oakwood Comprehensive School on Moorgate Road.
Consequently the famous house and estate are presently separated from the Renishaw baronetcy for the first time in the family's history; Sir George living at the other Sitwell residence, Weston Hall.

Jasper Sitwell appears as an agent of the fictional espionage agency S.H.I.E.L.D., beginning in the feature "Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D." in Marvel Comics' Strange Tales in 1966, and continuing into the subsequent series Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. in 1968.
In Paris Tchelitchew became acquainted with Gertrude Stein and, through her, the Sitwell and Gorer families.
To the north west of the village is Renishaw Hall, a country house belonging to the Sitwell family, who were owners of the local iron foundry before it was nationalised.
Sir Sacheverell Reresby Sitwell, 6th Baronet, CH (15 November 1897 – 1 October 1988) was an English writer, best known as an art critic, music critic (his books on Mozart, Liszt, and Domenico Scarlatti are still consulted), and writer on architecture, particularly the baroque.
His great-grandson Francis Hurt Sitwell (1728–1793), father of the first baronet, inherited Barmoor Castle, Northumberland.
His daughter Anne married Sir Frederick Stovin in 1815; this was an unusual marriage, as Stovin was the younger brother of Sarah, Sitwell's second wife and Anne's stepmother.
