As a key member of the local authority, in 1903 he built the White House (det Hvide Hus) which became a favourite gathering spot for members of the Skagen Painters including Holger Drachmann and P.S. Krøyer.
His artistic career took place during the period of Danish art between the Golden Age of Danish Painting and that of the Skagen Painters.
In retrospect, his paintings are free of historical or mythical figures, they do not interpret scenes along the lines of the Skagen Painters.
