1930 – The French explorer and writer, Michel Vieuchange, died of dysentery in Agadir on 30 November 1930, on his return from the "forbidden city" of Smara.

It is located 80 kilometres north of Bir Lehlou, close the Moroccan border and within the Moroccan Wall which divides the former territory, on the P42 road between Smara and Tindouf in Algeria.
Jean Joseph Marie Vieuchange (1906–2003) was a French adventurer and doctor, best known for preparing for publication the hand-written notebooks of his brother, Michel, describing his discovery of Smara in the Western Sahara in November 1930.
