unusual facts about Smilax

Greenbrier, Arkansas

The town was named for the painfully prickly greenbriar vines which grew along the creek through the town; removing these dense and thorny thickets was apparently a memorable experience for the founders.

Eurema smilax

The Small Grass Yellow (Eurema smilax) is a small pierid butterfly species found in Australia, including Lord Howe Island.

Kumejima-tsumugi

It is then dyed with the kasuri technique using indigenous plant dyes and a mud mordant to give it its usual black-brown colouring; the plants used are the guru, techika, kurubo or Japanese persimmon, yamamomo, and yuna or cotton tree hibiscus.

Life zones of the Mediterranean region

This zone is mostly used for agriculture, but studies say Mastic (Pistacia lentiscus), Common Juniper (Juniperus communis), (Aristolochia baetica) and Mediterranean Smilax or Common Smilax (Smilax aspera) would normally grow here.

Lyonia lucida

It shares the understory with other plants such as sweetbells (Eubotrys racemosa), highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum), sweet pepperbush (Clethera alnifolia), titi (Cyrilla racemiflora), laurelleaf greenbrier (Smilax laurifolia), honeycup (Zenobia pulverulenta), and oaks (Quercus spp.).
