Athersley

The adjoining estate of New Lodge is separated by Wakefield Road from Athersley North yet other estates surrounding the area have no noticeable separation, most notably Smithies and Monk Bretton.

Royal St. John of Ipanema Iron Foundry

There, in what was called Furnas Valley (now Stream Iron, Ribeirão do ferro), they did install an oven and two Smithies for making iron by the direct method recognized asthe first attempt to iron manufacturing on American soil.


Angelburg

Charcoal works were set up in the forests, and in the dales, bloomeries and smithies were busy smelting and working iron.

Bob Smithies
