In March 2011 the Smokehouse had to recall a batch of smoked salmon, due to the presence of low levels of Listeria monocytogenes.
In 2003, a barbecue restaurant opened in Exeter with the name "Goody Cole's Smokehouse," relocating in 2006 to Brentwood, New Hampshire.
Several outbuildings or dependencies have been preserved: the Ice House, Smoke House, Kitchen/Laundry, School House, Pack House, two Tobacco Barns, and a Double Tennant (former slave) Dwelling.
As well as the Castle, Orford's attractions include river cruises, a number of pubs and hotels, a traditional post office which sells fresh bread, a smokehouse, and two restaurants; the Butley-Orford Oysterage and the Crown and Castle Hotel, owned by food writer TV personality Ruth Watson.
These buildings are Ashland (built 1835 in James City County, Virginia); Dower Quarter (built 1835, Henrico County, Virginia); Ladysmith (built 1857, Caroline County, Virginia); Duck Church (built 1917, Dare County, North Carolina); Pocahontas Tea House Outhouse (built ca. 1930, Henrico County) and Peace Hill Smokehouse (built ca. 1920, Charles City County, Virginia).
In September 1973, Toni and Daryl were performing at The Smokehouse Restaurant in Encino, California and two men from a small F.M. station were in the audience one night.
