During a visit to the Sněžka in 1825, he set to music the poem Des Deutschen Vaterland by Ernst Moritz Arndt, thus becoming well known in the Prussian Berlin circles.
The first historical account of an ascent to the peak is in 1456, by an unknown Venetian merchant searching for precious stones.
