Helga Deen (Stettin, Germany, 6 April 1925 – Sobibor, 16 July 1943) was the author of a diary, discovered in 2004, which describes her stay in a Dutch prison camp, Kamp Vught, where she was brought during World War II at the age of 18.
Before his last assignment at Sobibor in occupied Poland, Steubl was a senior male nurse at Schloss Hartheim, the biggest mass extermination centre outside Eastern Europe set up at Alkoven in Upper Austria.

In the late 1970s and 1980s, he worked with Richard Rashke, an American author, to locate and interview Sobibor survivors for the latter's book, Escape from Sobibor (1983), about the revolt at the camp.
