January 11 – The government of the state of Coahuila approves a Civil Solidarity Pact ("Pacto Civil de Solidaridad") that permits same sex civil unions statewide.
At the initiative of Mexican coffee farmers, the first fair trade labelling initiative, Stichting Max Havelaar, was launched in the Netherlands on November 15, 1988 by Nico Roozen, Frans van der Hoff and Dutch ecumenical development agency Solidaridad.
Frans van der Hoff (born 1939), or Francisco VanderHoff Boersma as he is called in Latin America, is a Dutch missionary who, in collaboration with Nico Roozen and ecumenical development agency Solidaridad, launched Max Havelaar, the first Fairtrade label in 1988.
Famous examples include 'El Cangrejo' (The Crab), 'Los Zapatos Viejos' (Old Shoes), 'India Catalina', el 'Sendero Yuma' (Path of the Yuma), 'Monumento a la Solidaridad' (Monument to Solidarity), among others.

The Mezcala Bridge (also known as the Mezcala-Solidaridad Bridge), is a cable-stayed bridge located in the state of Guerrero on Highway 95 in Mexico.
Formerly part of the municipality of Chalco, it was split off as a separate entity in 1994, during the presidency of Salinas de Gortari, under his Programa Nacional de Solidaridad (National Solidarity Program).
