She studied journalism at the South Glamorgan Institute of Higher Education in Cardiff, then trained at the Solihull News in 1981, moving to work full-time at the Birmingham Mail and Birmingham Post.
The Solihull Times was originally founded as a rival newspaper in the early 1980s (at this point both were "paid for" titles), although both are now owned by Trinity Mirror.
Virdee became a journalist at the age of 18, working as a trainee reporter at the Solihull Times in her home town.
