Æthelwine of Athelney

Athelney was made falmous as the island fort, in the somerset marshes from where Alfred the Great launched his conquest of the Danes, two centuries after Æthelwine lived there.


Barrington, Somerset

The village is located on the southern edge of the Somerset Levels and many of the houses are built from cob and thatched with local reeds.

Fosse Way

Other minor Roman roads lead from Ilchester and Lydford-on-Fosse towards Street and the A39 route along the Polden Hills, leading to Roman salt works on the Somerset Levels, and ports at Combwich, Crandon Bridge and Highbridge.

Norton Manor Camp

With easy access to the ideal combined training territory contained within the Blackdown and Quantock Hills, as well as the Somerset Levels, from 1983 the camp has been home to 40 Commando, Royal Marines.
