Spaziante was a member of a group along with Ken Penders and Steven Butler known collectively as "The Sonic Team" (not to be confused with "Sonic Team", the original creators of the franchise), because of their extensive work on the series.
While creating concept art for the game, Sakai drew a dragon and showed it to Yuji Naka, the director of Sonic Team, who connected the image with the Phantasy Star series of games that had been released for the Sega Genesis.
