While making Mallrats, Kevin Smith met Canadian Film Threat journalist Malcolm Ingram and his friend Matt Gissing; the three decided to make Drawing Flies, the title of which is based on a Soundgarden song from the album Badmotorfinger.
While the latter aired videos by more diverse artists, such as The Jesus and Mary Chain, Bronski Beat, New Order, The Replacements, The Verve, Weezer, Robyn Hitchcock, and Butthole Surfers, Alternative Nation focused primarily on the alternative hits of the day, including songs by Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Oasis.
A number of drummers endorse or have endorsed Ayotte drums, including Matt Cameron of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, Ryan Vikedal of Nickelback, Jon Fishman of Phish and Jeremy Taggart of Our Lady Peace.
The group has opened for High on Fire, Fu Manchu and Kyuss and in 2012 performed at the Auckland Big Day Out music festival alongside notable international acts such as Soundgarden, Röyksopp, and Kasabian.

The band slowly gained popularity during the height of the Filipino rock explosion, with the local rock community opening up to the influence of foreign grunge acts such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.

For a time, The Bear experimented with an updating of its classic-rock playlist to include more hit AOR and alternative rock tracks from the 1980s and 1990s, from artists such as White Zombie, Alice in Chains, Nine Inch Nails, Soundgarden, Live, Stone Temple Pilots and Depeche Mode.
A tongue-in-cheek portmanteau of "Live Aid" and "Woodstock", each weekend-long Livestock event brought well known national acts such as Soundgarden and Tesla together with lesser-known bands hoping for a chance at success.
