In 1832, English civil engineer William Gravatt, who had worked with Marc Isambard Brunel and his son Isambard on the Thames Tunnel, was commissioned by Mr. H.R. Palmer to examine a scheme for the South Eastern Railway's route from London to Dover.


Algernon West

West was also a director of the South Eastern Railway and he caused a new station, named Wanborough but actually at Normandy, to be opened in 1891.

Charing Cross railway station

The original station building was built on the site of the Hungerford Market by the South Eastern Railway and opened on 11 January 1864.
