Crampton's Gap Historic District

The district extends on the west to the foot of South Mountain, and to the east of Burkittsville, beyond the eastern foot of the mountain.

Fitzhugh Lee

Lee performed well in the Maryland Campaign of 1862, covering the Confederate infantry's withdrawal from South Mountain, delaying the Union Army advance to Sharpsburg, Maryland, before the Battle of Antietam, and covering his army's recrossing of the Potomac River into Virginia.

Fort Ritchie

Fort Ritchie at Cascade, Maryland was a military installation southwest of Blue Ridge Summit, Pennsylvania and southeast of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania in the area of South Mountain.

John F. Farnsworth

In September 1862, Farnsworth led a cavalry brigade in the Army of the Potomac during the Maryland Campaign, sparring with Confederate cavalry under J.E.B. Stuart and Wade Hampton in a series of minor engagements near South Mountain and Middletown, Maryland.

KUTP

The two stations share studio facilities located on the west end of Downtown Phoenix's Copper Square district; KUTP's transmitter is located atop South Mountain on the city's south side.

Maria Furnace is a South Mountain populated place on Toms Creek west of Fairfield, Pennsylvania, that was the location of an 1822 blast furnace until operations were moved to Caledonia.

WBPH-TV maintains offices and studio facilities in Allentown, and its transmitter is located on South Mountain in Allentown, Pennsylvania (specifically Salisbury Township in the Lehigh Valley region of the state).

Yellow Breeches Creek

Yellow Breeches Creek rises on the northwestern side of South Mountain, in the Michaux State Forest, and collects the drainage of several hollows along the mountainside.

Samuel Garland, Jr.

When Gen. Robert E. Lee divided the Army of Northern Virginia in the Maryland Campaign, Garland's brigade was tasked with defending Fox's Gap, one of the passes in the South Mountain chain.

Grading began on the South Mountain Railroad between Rockville and Linglestown, and the corporate enrollment tax was paid for the South Side Railroad in 1873.
