It is named after Henry C. "Luke" Dones, an astronomer at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado.
Stern was Executive Director of the Southwest Research Institute's Space Science and Engineering Division until becoming Associate Administrator of NASA's Science Mission Directorate in 2007.
This led David Nesvorný of the Southwest Research Institute to propose that the Solar System began with five giant planets with an additional Neptune-mass planet between Saturn and Uranus.
Major centers for planetary science research include the Lunar and Planetary Institute, the Applied Physics Laboratory, the Planetary Science Institute, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Southwest Research Institute, and Johnson Space Center.
