Special Protection Area

A Special Protection Area (SPA) is a designation under the European Union Directive on the Conservation of Wild Birds.


Geography of Kent

Kent houses a significant number of internationally important sites, including Special Protection Areas, Ramsar Wetlands, Special Areas of Conservation, Sites of Special Scientific Interest, National Nature Reserves, Environmentally Sensitive Areas, Local Wildlife Sites, Roadside Nature Reserves and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Hacha Grande

The mountain makes up part of the highest mountain range on the island, Los Ajaches, which is designated a Special Protection Area (SPA) under the European Commission Directive on the Conservation of Wild Birds.

Kalvebod Fælled

A large area in the southwestern corner is set aside under the Natura 2000-scheme as an EU-recognized bird protection area to which the general public has no access.

The area of the parish belongs to the SPA - Special Protection Area, for endangered species of steppe birds such as the Great Bustard and Lesser Kestrel.

Killykeen Forest Park

Responsibility for the upkeep of Killykeen is through the state's commercial forestry service Coillte together with the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) where Lough Oughter and its associated loughs are protected under the EU Habitats Directive as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Special Protection Area (SPA) for wildlife and particularly wintering birds.

Poulaphouca

The reservoir at Poulaphouca has been designated as a Special Protection Area by the National Parks and Wildlife Service and is of international importance for its Greylag Goose population.
