A close relative of Spermophilus relictus, it is sometimes considered the same species, and shares the common name Tien Shan ground squirrel.
It is sometimes called the relict ground squirrel or the Tien Shan ground squirrel, a name also used for Spermophilus ralli, which is sometimes considered the same species.
