On 4 October 1987, the Sri Lankan Navy captured an LTTE boat off Point Pedro with seventeen Tigers, including some high-profile leaders of the movement, on board.
The mission was undertaken as a symbolic act of support for the Tamil Tigers two days after a previous unarmed effort which was mounted in the form of a small naval flotilla and was thwarted by the Sri Lankan Navy.
It was thought to be retaliation against the alleged killing of two Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy off the Tamil Nadu coast in the past two weeks.
At the time of its sinking it was the largest ship in the Sri Lankan navy and its sister ship SLNS Jayasagara was the flagship of the fleet.
After a major offensive in 2007 by the Sri Lankan Army, the Sea Tigers became less effective as the Sri Lankan Navy matched their strength with better weapons, and faster boats such as Super Dvora Mk II.
While serving as the Commander of the Sri Lankan Navy, Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe was invited by the United States Navy Chief, Admiral Gary Roughead to participate at the 19th International Seapower Symposium conducted by the United States Navy at the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island, held from 6 to 9 October 2009.
