Born in Colombo, to Tamil father Tyronne Mathews and Burgher Sinhalese mother Monica Mathews, he captained the Sri Lankan cricket team in the 2006 U-19 Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka.
Nehra started playing first-class cricket for his hometown, Delhi, in the 1997/1998 season and made his Test debut against Sri Lanka at Colombo in 1999 and his ODI debut against Zimbabwe at Harare in 2001.
His first match was between Australia and Sri Lanka at Brisbane on 8 December to 12 December 1989, a drawn match on which the bat dominated, Tom Moody and Mark Taylor scoring centuries.
