In 1988 an Australian television movie, The First Kangaroos actor Dennis Waterman's villainous depiction of Goldthorpe drew formal complaints from his granddaughter.
In the early 18th century Barnsley attorney William Henry Marsden Esquire of nearby Burntwood Hall bought the Lord of the Manor of Bolton on Dearne with Goldthorpe for £10,000 together with over 1,000 acres (4 km²) of land.
Ernie Goldthorpe was the son of Walter Goldthorpe who played rugby union and rugby league in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the nephew of rugby league footballer Albert Goldthorpe.
