The world's first inmate video visitation system was installed in late 1995 followed shortly thereafter with a similar installation at the St. Lucie County Jail in Ft. Pierce, Florida in early 1996.

In 2004, Bannister was assigned to play for High-A St. Lucie in the Florida State League, where he put together a 5-7 record with a 4.24 ERA in twenty starts and was a Florida State League All-Star.
In Florida, the SFL also proposed a team named the "Orange" (initially in Tampa and then in Fort Pierce) and a team based at South County Stadium in Port St. Lucie, neither of which came to fruition; likewise, the plan to play a game in Freeport, Bahamas's Grand Bahama Stadium also never occurred.
Since 1994, the charity has raised over one million dollars for children and families in the listening area (Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, and Okeechobee Counties).
A number of former St. Lucie Mets player are currently on the New York Mets roster including David Wright, Ike Davis, Jon Niese, Lucas Duda, and Rubén Tejada.
