After completing studies of shipbuilding in Saint John and St. Martins in the mid-1970s, she intended to write a book about the Bay of Fundy.

She studied Philosophy and Politics at Oxford University (New College) and Art at Central St. Martins (London), after which she worked, amongst other jobs, as a painting assistant to Damien Hirst.
The brand was revived in 2009 by its new creators, Central St. Martins graduates Gabor Fabricius and Mei Mei Ding, with the support of the Alter family.

However, since the rhyme refers to bells in the City of London and St Martins-in-the-Fields is in the City of Westminster, the line more likely refers to St Martin Orgar, near Cannon Street, which no longer exists.
