On 3 November 2004, Ramelow was involved in an incident with A.S. Roma's Francesco Totti, during a 1–1 draw at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome for the Champions League: the Italian Totti jumped on a sliding Ramelow, stomping on his shoulder and back, and receiving a yellow card.
He is especially known internationally for being the captain of Yugoslavia during the 1968 European Football Championship, where they won silver by barely losing to the home side Italy after a two-legged final at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.
Olympiacos opened the second round of the group stage with a draw 0–0 to Real Madrid at the Karaiskakis Stadium and kept alive the record of being undefeated by Real Madrid in Athens in four matches, while the Reds moved a step closer to qualifying for the last 16 after coming from behind to defeat Lazio 2–1 in Stadio Olimpico.
