Arnfield portrayed the energy and excitement of football when she was invited by Sunderland Football Club to watch one of their games in their new stadium, and then paint a picture of the match.


Monkwearmouth

The area is also the home of the Stadium of Light, which was opened on the site of the abandoned Wearmouth Colliery in July 1997, and is the home of the football club Sunderland A.F.C., who had previously played at Roker Park.

Southwick, Sunderland

Sunderland A.F.C.'s Stadium of Light is visible to the east on the Monkwearmouth side.

From the opening of the Sunderland extension until December 2005, the station was on the Yellow line, so it was possible to travel between the Stadium of Light and St James, home of local rivals Newcastle United, without changing trains - although the journey involved a long detour via the coast.
