Hemlington was built on farmland during the 1960s and expanded thereafter, Coulby Newham lies on the outskirts and the villages of East Stainton and Stainton are to the south-west.
Sunday's Beck, is close to New Hutton, whence it passes Stainton, where it is renamed Stainton Beck.

Most recently Stainton toured with Clapton on his 2008 North American and European tour, which included a three night collaboration with Steve Winwood at Madison Square Garden in February 2008, and toured with Winwood and Clapton in 2009 and 2010.
Frederic was born at Stainton le Vale in Lincolnshire on 19 September 1868, the son of Francis Hugh Deane, Rector of Horsington and Stainton, and his wife and 2nd cousin, Emma Anne, the daughter of Robert Micklem Deane of Caversham in Oxfordshire (now Berkshire).
Stainton was a very wealthy man and his house in Lewisham, "Mountsfield", was one of London's more substantial residences set in its own park.
