Sen. Saland lost his 2012 re-election bid to Democrat Terry Gipson in a very tight race decided by less than 2,500 votes.

Saland worked as a legislative aide to a New Jersey Assemblyman, and later as an executive assistant to New York Assemblyman Emeel S. Betros, who later became Saland's law partner.
Gipson was elected to the Senate in 2012 after edging out longtime Republican Senator Stephen Saland by 2,100 votes.
