The fonts were developed by Steve Matteson of Ascender Corporation as Ascender Sans and Ascender Serif, which are also used for the Liberation fonts licensed by Red Hat under another open source license.

Droid fonts

The fonts are intended for use on the small screens of mobile handsets and were designed by Steve Matteson of Ascender Corporation.

Matteson also designed the user-interface font used in Microsoft’s Zune music player.

In 1990 Matteson began work at Monotype Corporation (later Agfa-Monotype) contributing to the creation of the Windows 3.1x core TrueType fonts: Arial, Times New Roman and Courier New.
