Langham, like most of the villages along the Stour Valley, was primarily agricultural until the 20th century, with a few large farms and many small holdings.

Robert Samuel was the minister of the parish church of East Bergholt, in the Stour valley, during the reign of King Edward VI, at which time it was permitted for priests to be married, and he dwelt there together with his wife.
Its long western border with Dullingham also follows field boundaries, most of which also follow the course of the Stour Valley Path, a long-distance footpath.
A railway in the Colne Valley was first proposed in 1846 when the "Colchester, Stour Valley, Sudbury and Halstead Railway Company" was incorporated to build a line from Marks Tey on the Eastern Counties Railway to Sudbury, with branches to Halstead and from Colchester to Hythe.
The landscape continues to change as changing agricultural practices, increased leisure time and an awareness of environmental concerns all contribute to development of the Stour valley.
