The word "stow" means place, as in "stow away", and the name of the hundred was probably derived from an old name for Stowmarket, the hundred's largest town.

2003 – In April 2003, the Association moved its Headquarters to purpose built offices in Stowmarket; which were officially opened by FA Vice-Chairman Ray Kiddell.

Located between the A14 and A140 to the east of Stowmarket, the parish contains the village of Earl Stonham (for which it is named), together with the hamlets of Forward Green and Middlewood Green.
