In his teenage years, he moved to Vermont to pursue his love of snowboarding by enrolling in the respected Stratton Mountain School - a ski and snowboarding academy.
Other medal-owning alumni include Lindsey Jacobellis ('03), with a silver medal in snowboard cross in Torino, Italy, and Kristen Luckenbill ('97), with a gold medal in soccer at the 2004 Summer Games in Athens, Greece.

Ross Powers ('97) won a bronze medal (snowboarding halfpipe) at the 1998 winter games held in Nagano, Japan, and a gold medal at the 2002 games held in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Powers is the Director of the Snowboarding program at the Stratton Mountain School and currently(2010–present) resides in Stratton, Vermont, with his wife Marisa and daughters, Victoria and Meredith.
