The Bishop disapproved of Pope Benedict XVI's Summorum Pontificum, saying to La Repubblica, "I can't fight back the tears. This is the saddest moment in my life as a man, priest and bishop...It's a day of mourning, not just for me but for the many people who worked for the Second Vatican Council. A reform for which many people worked, with great sacrifice and only inspired by the desire to renew the Church, has now been cancelled".
The Tridentine Mass, which supplanted the various versions of the Pre-Tridentine Mass and in turn, with the introduction of the Mass of Paul VI ceased to be the ordinary form of the Roman Rite but some versions of which continue to be used as extraordinary forms of the Roman Rite, with official approval in the case of the 1962 version.
The book argues for a return to the Tridentine Rite of the Mass, the form of the Roman Rite before the Second Vatican Council, the use of which, in accordance with the Roman Missal of 1962, is authorized, under certain conditions, by the 2007 motu proprio Summorum Pontificum.
Some surmised that the timing of Marini's departure may be linked to the July 2007 decision by Pope Benedict to liberalise permission for the 1962 Tridentine Mass.
But, since Pope Benedict XVI's motu proprio, Summorum Pontificum, use of the Tridentine rite has increased; this, along with other papal comments on the use of appropriate liturgical music, is promoting a new plainsong revival.
He was embrolied in scandal after Pope Benedict XVI on 7 July 2007 issued the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum liberalising the use of the Latin Mass.
