Freeman Horton was an accomplished engineer who was best known for building the original Sunshine Skyway Bridge across Tampa Bay from Saint Petersburg in Pinellas County through the waters of Hillsborough County to Tiera Ceia in Manatee County that replaced a ferry service between the two land areas.
Muar Second Bridge is a 632 metre semi-harp cable-stayed bridge with a 132 metre mid-span across Muar River like the Sunshine Skyway Bridge at Tampa Bay, Florida in the United States and Prai River Bridge in Penang.
This disaster shares some common features with the Skyway Bridge collapse in Florida in 1980, and the I-40 Bridge Disaster in Oklahoma in 2002, both involving collisions with ships.

The story follows three central characters (Nicole, Jason and Cale) and several secondary ones (The Suicide Kid, The Punk Kid, and The Fight Kid, among others) through the aftermath of the '96 riots, and features several notable St. Petersburg landmarks including the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, the St. Petersburg Pier, St. Petersburg High School and the house where Jack Kerouac lived prior to his death in 1969.
