Trained as a dancer in her youth in New York City, she was deeply influenced by Erick Hawkins, whose technique was designed to accept gravity, reduce strain, and eliminate artificiality.

Upon her return to her native New York, Santo began a long association with Michael Harner, of the Foundation for Shamanic Studies, and ultimately became a facilitator for that work, along with her contemporaries, Sandra Ingerman and Jonathan Horowitz.

During her time at Naropa, Santo served as apprentice for Alan Ginsberg, helping organize his library and materials, and came into contact with Anne Waldman, Diane DiPrima, Gregory Corso and other poets loosely associated with the Beat poetry movement.
