The name also refers to the region immediately to the southwest of the bay, roughly corresponding to Svalbarðshreppur municipality.
Steingrímur was born in Gunnarsstaðir, a large sheep farm between Garður and Þórshöfn in the Þistilfjörður region of northeast Iceland (Svalbarðshreppur municipality).
