In a review, noted Chicago Tribune music critic Claudia Cassidy, who was known for her unkind reviews of established artists, recalled Richter first walking on stage hesitantly, looking vulnerable (as if about to be "devoured"), but then sitting at the piano and dispatching "the performance of a lifetime".

Richter died at Central Clinical Hospital in Moscow from a heart attack, after he suffered from a depressed state of mind caused by his inability to perform in public.

Among other notable pianists to make recordings of the collection are Walter Gieseking, Sviatoslav Richter, Emil Gilels, Eva Knardahl, Andrei Gavrilov, Håkon Austbø, Einar Steen-Noekleberg, and Gerhard Oppitz.
Together with the orchestra, artists from Romania and other countries have performed, among them: Ion Voicu, Valentin Gheorghiu, Ștefan Ruha, Monique de La Bruchollerie and Jean Jaques Thiollier, Sviatoslav Richter, Rudolf Kerer, Lazar Berman, Dimitri Bashkirov, Ivry Gitlis, and Montserrat Caballé.
Sviatoslav Richter plays piano for the character of Liszt, including études and the famous "Liebestraum".
