The name of Syamzha originates from the Syamzhena River, which, in turn, originates from Finnic languages and means "moss water" or "water from the swamp".
In 1953, the administrative center of the district was moved to the selo of Syamzha.
Paved roads connect Vozhega with Konosha (there is an unpaved stretch) in the north and Syamzha via Kharovsk in the south, connecting the district to the main road network.
