When Charles Darnay is arrested on his arrival in England, Mr. Lorry retains the lawyers C.J. Stryver and Sydney Carton to defend Darnay.
Back in England, he helps Sydney Carton "get something" on the paid government witness and spy, John Barsad.
•
He accompanies Lucie and Miss Pross to church the night they run into Sydney Carton and later that night Cruncher tries to unsuccessfully "resurrect" Barsad's colleague and fellow spy Roger Cly in the graveyard.
This is done with the help of John Barsad, an English spy working at one of the French prisons, after a conversation described as a "hand of cards".
•
Sydney Carton is introduced into the novel A Tale of Two Cities as a young, very sloppy but brilliant lawyer who bears an uncanny likeness to Charles Darnay, the prisoner he is defending.
