The Tahir clan were Yemeni magnates who originated from the area of Juban and al-Miqranah, about 80 kilometers south of Rada'a.

Thus they built schools, mosques and irrigation channels as well as water cisterns and bridges in Zabid and Aden, Yafrus, Rada'a, Juban, etc.

Al-Mansur Muhammad attacked Tahiride positions between Dhamar and San'a in 1496 and 1498.
After some skirmishing, the Tahiride Sultan Ali temporarily took Dhamar in 1460.

His grandson Yahya bin al-Mukhtar bin al-Mutahhar was emir of Ta'izz under the Tahiride Sultan Amir.
The Tahiride Dynasty ruled the lowlands and southern highland from Ta'izz, and had recently sacked the Zaidi capital San'a.
