Islands District currently consists of 21 members, of which the district is divided into 10 constituencies, electing a total of 10 with 8 ex-officio members who is the Peng Chau, Lamma North, Tung Chung, Lamma South, Tai O, Lantau South, Mui Wo and Cheung Chau rural committee chairmen and 3 members appointed by the Chief Executive.
In early 16th century, Tai O was once occupied shortly by Portuguese during the Battle of Tamao.
In 1937, Walter Schofield, then a Cadet Officer in the Hong Kong Civil Service, wrote that at that time the Tankas were "boat-people who sometimes lived in boats hauled ashore, or in more or less boat-shaped huts, as at Shau Kei Wan and Tai O".
After emerging from the barroom shoot-out unscathed, he informed his superiors that he would be travelling to Tai O, where the Imperial Nines are based, to investigate further.

Since Tai O is a remote place, its students use schools buses to get to Mui Wo.
