The games featured a cultural exchange group, a group of intellectually disabled men from Nagasaki who played taiko (traditional drums) during the opening and closing ceremonies and selected track events.
The festival has also created unique events including Discover the Arts, a hands-on arts program drawing more than 3,400 children annually; Movies in the Park, an outdoor screening of classic and cutting-edge films; Monday Night Family Series, featuring kid-friendly performances from marionettes to music; and, the World Music Series, bringing diverse musical entertainment from around the globe including David Krakauer’s Klezmer Madness, Mariachi Sol de Mexico and San Jose Taiko.

For its 50th season, the Peninsula Symphony commissioned notable composer Melissa Hui to create Always, a work for taiko, chorus, and orchestra.
Even though PJ had never had any prior instruction of taiko before, under training from groups such as Ondekoza, Kodo, Warabi-za, and Oedo Sukeroku, PJ went on to become a leading taiko artist and teacher.

Tanaka and San Francisco Taiko Dojo host an annual International Taiko Festival at Zellerbach Hall on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley.
Influenced by San Jose Taiko, Mark Honda founded Kyodo Taiko in 1990 under the Nikkei Student Union at UCLA.
