It was first described by Litvinchuk, Borkin, Skorinov and Rosanov in 2008 and is found in the Talysh Mountains in Azerbaijan and parts of Iran.

Lilium ledebourii is endemic to a small area in the Talysh Mountains and in Amarlu District, where it occurs at altitudes around 2,100 meter.
