Al Toraifi was named as the chief editor of Asharq Al Awsat on 11 December 2012 with effect from 1 January 2013, and he replaced Tariq Alhomayed.
Former editor was Tariq Alhomayed whose leadership earned mixed reviews as it was associated with much criticism of Asharq Al-Awsat.
She wrote a weekly column for the Saudi-owned, London-based international Arab publication Asharq Al-Awsat from 2004 to 2006 before her articles were discontinued by editor Tariq Alhomayed for being "too critical" of the Egyptian regime.
The Washington Post editor Jim Hoagland characterised Almohayed in 2009 as "a courageous columnist".
