In 1978, it was donated to the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, and following its 1991 restoration, it served as pulling power on the TVRM's excursions, and was also featured in country singer Josh Turner's music video for his hit song Long Black Train (song) in 2003.

On January 8, 2014, Norfolk Southern announced on their Facebook page (by sharing a picture that was posted by the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum) that 4501 passed its FRA hydro test, and that all of its wheels were placed back underneath it.
