A 2012 law merged the parish with neighbouring Amorim and Terroso, becoming the northern parish of the city of Póvoa de Varzim, known as União das Freguesias de Aver-o-Mar, Amorim e Terroso.
Cividade de Terroso was an important city of the Castro culture in North-western Iberian Peninsula, established during the Bronze Age, between 800 and 900 BC, as a result of the displacement of the people inhabiting the fertile plain of Póvoa de Varzim.
Its arid soil didn’t help in developing an appropriate Castro town like in neighbouring Cividade Hill in the parish of Terroso despite its rise, but Castro ruins from the 2nd century BC are known, probably a north surveillance post of Cividade de Terroso.
The internal organization of the community was established in rulings by the founders, in which they donated several villas and hamlets in Póvoa de Varzim and farms in Touginha, Beiriz, Terroso, Formariz, Laundos, Navais, and Mirante, with an obligation that four chaplains would pray four masses per day honouring their founders and King Denis.
Aver-o-Mar, Amorim e Terroso includes landmarks such as Póvoa de Varzim City Park, the ruins of the Cividade de Terroso, the beaches of Aver-o-Mar, the hillside village of Terroso and Amorim's churches.
