Short was discussing the matter with Governor George Washington Glick in Kansas City, and Bat Masterson called in favors from old friends including Wyatt Earp, Charlie Bassett, Johnny Millsap, Shotgun John Collins, Texas Jack Vermillion, and Johnny Green.
Wyatt Earp and James' youngest brother, Warren—with gambler Doc Holliday and gunmen Sherman McMasters, "Turkey Creek" Jack Johnson, and Texas Jack Vermillion—then hunted down those they held responsible for the attacks during the Earp Vendetta Ride.

This fact caused Wyatt some chagrin in memory, since Vermillion stayed by him at Iron Springs when the other three men in his posse at the time (Doc, Johnson, and McMasters) fled under fire (Warren Earp was away on an errand for the posse).
Texas Jack Vermillion remained cool under fire and stuck close to Wyatt during the fight.
