Near the neo-gothic town hall of 1872, the explorer Thaddäus Haenke was born in 1761.
The well-known glass artist Friedrich Egermann also ranked among the family’s descendants as the natural historian and explorer of South America Thaddäus Haenke.
It was named in 1791 by Alessandro Malaspina for Thaddäus Haenke, who was serving as botanist and naturalist with Malaspina's expedition.
Also on board were many scientists and artists, such as painting master José del Pozo, artists José Guío and Fernando Brambila, cartoonist and columnist Tomás de Suria, botanists Luis Née, Antonio Pineda and Thaddäus Haenke, and many others.

The same year, Ludwig Radlkofer described W. pallida, based on the same Hartweg specimen as well as specimens collected by Thaddäus Haenke (perhaps in Acapulco) and Frederik Liebmann.
