Billy Ward and his Dominoes

White and Brown both left in 1951 to form The Checkers, and were replaced by James Van Loan (1922-1976) and David McNeil (1932-2005) (previously of The Larks).

The Checkers

Fumiya Fujii, who was the lead singer and the main lyricist, went on to pursue a successful solo career.

Although it was a band which produced their own songs, they were frequently regarded as just male aidoru by Japanese rock fans because of their early marketing promotion.

The band was formed by Toru Takeuchi, the leader and the guitarist, who asked Fumiya Fujii to start a band with him.

After leaving his job in Japanese National Railways, he started his music career in the 1980s as the vocalist of the immensely popular group The Checkers and started on his solo project after they split up.

Ambrose and Boris Said had an incident at Mexico City that spring where Said after being wrecked by him (Ambrose) furiously wagged his finger at Ambrose as he went a lap down and vowed revenge; Marcos Ambrose had to hope that Said would not commit his payback and so to try to not anger Said, Ambrose followed him to the checkers and soon a caution came out on the final turn for Steve Wallace who ran out of gas.
